Michelle Roland, MD, CDC Tanzania Country Director
In this presentation, Michelle Roland, MD, gives a glimpse of her experiences working as CDC Country Director in Tanzania. She provides a brief description of HIV statistics and health services in Tanzania and gives an overview of the organizational structure of PEPFAR and the CDC office in Tanzania, including non-HIV related activities such as the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) and epidemiological outbreak investigation services. The presentation gives a perspective on the challenges and successes of working in this context, such as balancing equity with targeted programming, negotiating with diverse agencies and implementing partners, while working with minimal medical technology and public-health-based algorithms, often in one-room dispensaries, to provide life-saving medical care.
