Activity Objectives

In this course Andy Choi, MD, presented three cases that illustrate key aspects of kidney disease among HIV-infected patients, covering:

HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN)
acute kidney injury (AKI)
immune complex glomerulonephritis (ICGN)
viremia and kidney function
tenofovir-associated nephropathy
He concluded with open questions on ARV treatment's impact on kidney disease among HIV-infected patients.

CME Accreditation

The HIV InSite Group offers this activity in conjunction with The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Office of Continuing Medical Education. The UCSF Office of Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The UCSF Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This CME activity is accredited from March 1, 2011 to March 1, 2014. Content is reviewed yearly. Participants who successfully complete the activity posttest and submit the evaluation and registration forms are eligible to receive CME credit. Physician (MDs, DOs, and international equivalents) may receive CME credit for completing this activity.

Grant Support and Cost

This Grand Rounds / CME activity was made possible through an educational grant from the NIAID-funded UCSF-GIVI Center for AIDS Research. There is a $25 processing fee, which goes to the UCSF Office of Continuing Medical Education.

Andrew Choi, MD, MAS

Andrew Choi was an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology. He arrived at UCSF to train in Nephrology in 2004, and was seen as a rising star on the national and international scene, on track to become one of the world's leading experts in HIV related kidney disease before he passed away suddenly on August 14, 2010.

Susa Coffey, MD

Dr. Coffey is an Associate Professor of Medicine at UCSF, and is an attending physician in the Positive Health Program at San Francisco General Hospital, San Francisco's largest Ryan White Care Act-funded HIV specialty clinic.
