Risk of hypersensitivity related to certain genetic factors, particularly HLA B*5701; consider screening for this before prescribing abacavir. Counsel patients on signs of hypersensitivity syndrome. In case of hypersensitivity syndrome, abacavir must be discontinued permanently.
